Time does not destroy value: it reveals it

Arbitrage finance lives in the moment. Industrialising States live in the long term. Between the two, one has to choose one's horizon.

Time does not destroy value: it reveals it

A dam takes five years to build and produces for fifty. A railway line is financed over twenty years and shapes a territory for a century. A timber processing plant changes the face of a region within a generation. Industrialisation is a long-term undertaking.

Yet most of the financing offered to African States is short-term in its thinking. The aim is the best rate of the moment, the market window, the arbitrage. Then the debt falls due, conditions have changed, and the State refinances in a hurry. The asset has been built. Its value, however, has dissolved into debt service.

We believe there is another way.

The hourglass

Our emblem is an hourglass. It is not an ornament. It expresses our conviction: time does not destroy value, it reveals it. A well-designed, well-run and well-governed asset gains value as the years go by. Its revenues stabilise. Its risks fade. The investors who supported it from the start reap the rewards.

The hourglass also says something else. When you turn it over, what was at the top goes to the bottom. A project's constraints, seen from another angle, become bargaining levers. A State that lacks budgetary room often holds assets that no one has yet thought of putting to work. A change of angle is where the solution begins.

The alliance

At the centre of our emblem is the ampersand, the "&" in our name. We call it the Nexus. It sums up what we do: connecting those who do not talk to each other enough.

  • Capital and States. Long-term investors are looking for real assets. States are looking for patient partners. They meet too rarely.
  • Finance and diplomacy. A structure that is sound on paper fails if it ignores a country's institutions, practices and balances.
  • Markets and territories. An asset is only worth the economy it serves: its suppliers, its customers, its jobs.
  • Strategy and execution. A vision without a timetable or governance remains a promise.

The tipping point

We step in at a specific moment. The moment when a situation is stuck: a project awaited for years, a budget that no longer allows borrowing, investors who are interested but have no framework in which to commit. That moment calls for a new financial architecture, without sovereign debt.

Our role is not to advise from a distance. We design the structure and we arrange it, with the State and for the State. The firm proposes. The State decides. It remains the owner of its assets, and what has been built returns to it.

Choosing one's horizon

We do not promise quick results. We offer a patient way of working, one that takes the time to qualify an asset, make it financeable and bring the right partners together around it. It is more demanding. It is also the only way to build value that lasts.

Time is our ally. We hope it will also become the ally of the States we work with.
